About the Hotel

26 High Street, Southampton, United Kingdom

The Star Hotel is one of the oldest buildings in Southampton, dating back to the 18th century. It offers a traditional Victorian setting with classic decor, providing a unique character that distinguishes it from modern chain hotels. Conveniently located just a five-minute walk from the city center and West Quay, it allows easy access to restaurants, shops, and local attractions.

Location

Situated on Southampton's historic High Street, the hotel is a short walk from major local attractions like the Titanic Engineer Officers Memorial and Tudor House and Garden. It is also within a 20-minute walk of Southampton Central train station, which connects to major cities including London. The property is located near ferry terminals for trips to the Isle of Wight, enhancing its accessibility.

Rooms

All guestrooms at The Star Hotel are equipped with free WiFi and flat-screen TVs. Rooms feature amenities such as tea and coffee-making facilities, heating, and daily maid service. En-suite bathrooms are standard, with complimentary toiletries provided. However, due to the building's age, guests should note that there are narrow and steep stairs leading to the rooms.

Eat & Drink

The hotel's restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with all food cooked to order. Many ingredients are sourced from local suppliers within Hampshire. Guests can also unwind at the Lounge Bar, which offers a variety of cocktails, wines, and a stunning drink selection in a cozy atmosphere.

Leisure & Business

The Star Hotel offers three meeting rooms suitable for various events. Safety features like smoke detectors and first aid kits are in place to ensure guest security. Additionally, there is on-site parking available at a competitive daily rate, which adds to the convenience for guests traveling by car.

The hotel is in a convenient location in the historic city center, close to West Quay, making it ideal for various activities. Although the front room I stayed in had some noise due to old windows, which affected my sleep quality, I did expect some street noise given the high street location. The rooms come at an extra £10 per night, and unfortunately, the drainage issue led to an uncomfortable smell in the room.

Rooms

The room I stayed in had a smelling drainage issue and was noisy due to old windows that didn't shut well, impacting my overall stay.
Service

The service, especially during breakfast, was warm and welcoming, making my two-night visit enjoyable. However, witnessing unprofessional behavior by staff discussing another guest negatively was off-putting.

I was boarding a cruise ship the following day and found the hotel to be nice with a comfy bed and a good shower. It was clean enough, but there was a terrible smell in the room. The window in the bathroom allowed dirt and weeds to get in when opened.

Rooms
6.0
The room was really nice with a comfy bed and a nice shower, but it had a terrible smell. It was generally clean, except for the issue with the bathroom window.
Service
5.0
I felt let down by the lack of investment in the service. The staff weren't ready for my explanation that I had stayed there two weeks prior, making my current room worse. Their attitude was very unprofessional, and the creaking floorboards were quite bothersome.
Location
8.0
The location was perfect for my needs as I was catching a ferry to the Isle of Wight. It's close to Witherspoons and offers car parking for £6.00 a night in the town center. It's ideal for exploring the city center on foot before heading to the cruise ships. The proximity to the main shopping center and the multi-story parking behind the hotel was brilliant.
Dining
7.0
The dining experience was mixed. The staff didn't greet or offer tea or coffee, which was disappointing. However, the food was delicious, and the warm ladies serving were wonderful. The traditional Greek dishes were a highlight.
Facilities
The hotel offers dry cleaning, laundry services, and a welcome drink. However, the lack of investment in the service was evident.

My stay at the hotel was a mixed experience. The room was warm, clean, and tidy, but the lack of ventilation made it uncomfortable and even posed a health risk for my wife, leading to a panic attack. On the bright side, the receptionist was helpful in addressing the issue. Overall, it was one of the worst rooms we've encountered in this establishment.

My stay at the hotel was a mix of positives and negatives. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, going the extra mile to ensure a pleasant experience. However, the room was disappointing with its cleanliness and lack of adequate safety measures. The location was convenient but noisy on certain nights, and the dining experience had its highs and lows.

Rooms
